After the wedding package has been booked, and engagement session scheduled, one of the questions we get most is: “what should we wear for our engagement portraits?”
Surprisingly, the question would be better addressed by talking about what not to wear. Engagement photos are meant to be fun and spontaneous, so on the ‘casual to formal’ scale of 1-10, where 1 is pajamas and 10 is a tux, we’d say aim for about 5-6!
Your personalities and style will greatly influence your choice of clothing, such as shabby-chic or fashion-forward, but whatever the style may be, keep it simple! It’s important to realize that when you reduce your view of the world to the narrow frame of a camera, and tune out all the clutter and distractions going on around you, something you had probably never noticed before can suddenly become the center of attention in a photograph. Not the least of which is your clothing.

The best rule of thumb we can give you is to avoid clothing with prints, patterns or stripes. Solid colors are always the best bet. When it comes to matching each other or not, you have a little more freedom. Probably the most popular choice among couples is to wear black tops and blue jeans. This is a very flattering combination for portraits, and brings the focus of attention to the faces, not the Charlie Brown zig zag on your chest!
So that’s it in a nutshell. When in doubt, just ask, we’re always happy to help!
